In Romans 12:2, Paul gives us this command: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

We Christians need to pay close attention to this command by Paul. And since he wrote under the supervision of the Holy Spirit, we should consider this command as coming from the Lord.

Man was to rule this world. But because he sinned, he became a slave to sin. Adam chose to believe the lie of Satan effectively relinquishing his God-given right to rule to the father of lies. No wonder Christ referred to Satan as the prince of this world (John 12:31, 14:30; Ephesians 2:2).

Satan has so cleverly designed systems of living for the residents of this world – its political, social and economic systems – designed to draw us farther away from God. Political systems are designed to promote the worship of power that lead to conflicts and rebellions that lead to violence and chaos. Social systems are designed to promote the worship of man that lead to self-worship. Economic systems are designed to promote the worship of money that competes with the worship of God.

Satan does a very good job of marketing his products to the point that everyone on earth blindly follows certain patterns of living. Our relatives and friends follow these patterns. People we admire follow these patterns. Not to conform is political, social or economic suicide. So we go with the flow.

Christians are commanded not to conform to the patterns of this world. We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Political, social or economic suicide or not, we are to reject what our relatives and friends do as they follow the ebb and flow of society.

True believers in Jesus Christ are not to ignore His word. We must obey God. Let us not forget what He says in James 4:4, . . . friendship with the world is enmity with God.
